A little extra storage space always helps, but we often struggle to keep it at the optimal level because it’s always full.

In this article, we are going to show you some tips on how to save and free up disk space on your Windows 10 computer.

How do I free up space on my Windows 10 hard drive?

  1. Perform Disk Cleanup
  2. Uninstall unnecessary apps
  3. Run Disk Analysis and Defragmentation
  4. Clean up temporary files of third-party software
  5. Find duplicate files
  6. Disable hibernation and system restore
  7. Use Storage Sense

1. Perform Disk Cleanup

  1. Go to Computer, right click on the drive you want to clean and choose Properties.
  2. Click Disk Cleanup under the Properties window.
  3. Wait for it to calculate how much space you can free up.disc cleaning
  4. Select the types of files you want to delete and click OK (you can delete temporary files, log files, files in your recycle bin, etc.).
  5. Click Clean up system files and wait for the cleaner to calculate everything. It will give you even more free space by cleaning up some unnecessary system files.
  6. Go to More options and delete the System Restore data under System Restore, Shadow Copies (This command removes all previous system restore points except the most recent.).

2. Uninstall unnecessary applications

We all probably have programs on our computers that we don’t use. These programs can take up a large amount of disk space, and uninstalling them will certainly provide you with additional storage capacity.

To get rid of unused programs, go to Programs and Features in Control Panel and see which programs or apps you don’t use often, or at all. Uninstall unnecessary software and check your free space again.

There is a column in Programs and Features that shows you the amount of space used by each program, so that you can easily calculate how much space you will get after you uninstall those programs.

If you don’t see this column, click the options button in the upper right corner and select View Details.

3. Run the disk analysis and defragmentation

run a disk scan

To determine what exactly is using the space on your hard drive, you can scan your hard drive with some of the hard drive scan programs.

Hard drive scanners scan your hard drive and display all information about it, among other things, what is using your hard drive space.

After scanning your system with a disk analyzer, it will show you exactly which folders or files are using the most space. Delete unnecessary files or folders and your free disk space will increase (but be careful, do not delete any important system or personal files).

Run a PC scan with Restoro repair tool to find errors causing security issues and slowdowns. Once the scan is complete, the repair process will replace the damaged files with new Windows files and components.

After performing this task, it is recommended that you defrag your hard drive, and you can check out our list of the best defragmentation tools for Windows, in case you haven’t made your choice of defragmentation software yet.

4. Clean up temporary files of third-party software

delete temporary files

Some disk cleanup tools do not remove temporary files from third-party software, such as the web browser cache. So you need to use third party software for this.

We recommend a very powerful product for this task, CCleaner. Just download it, run the scan and it will remove all unnecessary temporary files from third party software.

Get CCleaner

5. Check for duplicate files

remove duplicate files

Duplicate files can also use up space on your hard drive. Fortunately, there are a few programs that can find and remove all duplicate files and free up storage space for you.

You can use Easy Duplicate Finder to scan your hard drive for duplicate files and photos and delete them.

6. Disable hibernation and system restore

These tips will certainly save you space, but they will disable some important Windows features. We therefore do not recommend performing these operations.

You should only use it if you desperately need more space, but use it on its own, as it can be risky:

  • Disable hibernation – When your computer enters hibernation, it saves the contents of RAM memory to your hard drive. This allows your computer to save the system state without using any power, which can get you to where you left off when you start your computer next time. Windows saves the contents of RAM memory to C: hiberfil.sys file, and when you turn off hibernation completely, that file will be deleted.
  • Turn off system restore –You can also turn off System Restore completely to save more disk space. But this will delete all restore points and your save data, and if something is wrong with your computer, you will not be able to use System Restore to bring it back to normal.

7. Use Storage Sense

  1. Open Start and go to Settings> System> Storage.
  2. Activate Storage Sense.storage sense windows 10
  3. Click the Change the way we free up space automatically option.
  4. Check or uncheck the option boxes under Temporary files, Cloud content available locally, and Free up space now.

Storage Sense automatically deletes temporary files. It keeps an eye on your old and unused files and deletes them regularly. For example, it will delete files that have been in the recycle bin for more than 30 days.

This in particular is all you need to know about backing up and freeing up hard drive space, but if you have any other tips on how to increase hard drive space, please check them out. share with us in the comments.
